Vanessa Peters – Kickstarter

Here’s another top drawer recommendation Austin based singer-songwriter Vanessa Peters is seeking funds for her new album and as I own all of the CD’s from her excellent back catalogue I’ve just got to give this one a plug.

Vanessa Peters – Coming to Meet Me (Acoustic – Paste download)

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m finally ready to head into the studio and start working on a NEW RECORD and I am super excited about it! I’m doing this campaign to raise enough money for the project and not have to worry about being in debt afterwards. We are recording at an amazing studio in Austin called Treefort. We’ve got some great musicians on board, guys that we were able to snag while they weren’t out touring with The Old ’97s or The Polyphonic Spree, and we’ll be working with some great engineers and producers who have worked on records by bands like Spoon and the lovely Patty Griffin. So we’ve got all this awesomeness lined up… and now we just have to figure out how to pay for it!

We started this campaign to help fund the album. Wonderful listeners like yourselves can be a part of the project and get cool rewards in return. We’re doing a lot of exclusive stuff this time around, like t-shirts that will only be available to pledgers and won’t be sold at shows, and acoustic demos of the songs, and even – you won’t believe this – a tour through Tuscany with yours truly. Seriously! And there’s my Norman guitar, which will be used in the making of the album – it’s going to go to one lucky pledger…. just tons of cool stuff. Check out the list and if you have any questions about any of the rewards, just ask! The emails come directly to me and I’m more than happy to answer your questions.

Every dollar really does help, because this is an entirely self-funded project, and the money goes not only to renting the studio and paying the musicians and engineers, but it also goes to the cost of producing the album AND to promoting it, which is super-expensive and is the thing that never really gets done all that well because the money just runs out. I’m setting our goal at $10K because I think it’s an achievable amount… but it’s going to cost us at least twice that to record, manufacture, and promote the album. So please share this page with your friends! And thank you so much for your support – it means a lot to know that there are so many people out there who want to help me keep making music.

Van Meter – Should’ve Been A Weather Girl

One of the evolutions of my musical tastes over the last few years has been the shift from male dominated vocals to female, with the release of Van Meter’s début album Should’ve Been A Weathergirl I’ve another to add to the list of alt-country flavoured female favourites with Jennifer van Meter sitting comfortably in the zone with Lucinda Williams, Gina Villalobos, Kathleen Edwards, Kasey Chambers and Vanessa Peters.

The Maryland based singer/songwriter was inspired to pick up and play a Strat by her uncle, she moved on from hitting that first G-chord to later study music at East Tennessee State University, the album itself was produced at Mill Creek Studio Annapolis by Noel White who also handles drums and features a bunch of accomplished  musicians including Ruben Dobbs (guitar), Jimmy Jacobs (keyboards) and Dave Hadley (pedal steel). You get plenty of heartache for your buck on this set of songs, the album’s full of tales of love lost and misunderstood, broken hearts and promises, all the tracks are Jennifer van Meter originals and while not breaking new ground this album sets the bar high for aspiring artists and promises much for the future, my pick from the album – with an aching vocal washed with steel guitar Suckerpunch, you can check out some more tunes below on the Tunecore widget or better still get yourself a copy of the CD from here.

Vanessa Peters & Ice Cream on Mondays

One of my friends and fellow listeners over at LastFM is Vanessa Peters, she very kindly let me have a digi copy of her latest album, recorded with her band Ice Cream on Monday’s, very impressed I was too, so I bagged myself a few of Vanessa’s album’s on CD, if you like the sample track here then get yourself over to Vanessa’s blog and get a copy of the album, full of poetic, melodic, heartfelt writing.

The album was financed through fan pre-orders – and I’ll definitely be up for that next time if they decide to do it that way again. 10 countries, 250 shows, 3 albums in 3 years, Vanessa and the band are working on a tour in the UK, with dates to be confirmed in October / November time – check in at MySpace for updates VP&ICM and details of other dates including European festivals, there is also a digital acoustic release in the works, featuring tracks from the Sweetheart… album,
you can also get an acoustic mp3 by supporting
Paste magazine.
