Foghorn Leghorn – Not Before Time

Foghorn Leghorn - Not Before Time

London-based bluegrass band Foghorn Leghorn celebrate their 21st Anniversary by releasing their third album on their own Slammer Records label, Not Before Time is officially released on August 27th, the release also marks the fourth anniversary of the band’s own club night My Grass Is Blue that’s hosted at The Betsey Trotwood in London on the second Thursday of the month where the band have honed their songs before moving into the studio at the tail end of 2012 to record the albums twelve tracks at Reservoir Studios in London – handily the studio belongs to the bands double-bassist Chris Clarke (who also plays bass with Danny and The Champions of the World), Clarke and the other five members Tim Kent (Banjo), Eamonn Flynn (Mandolin), Kev O’Neill (Dobro), Del Brooks (Acoustic Guitar), Paul Fay (Fiddle & harmonica) all share vocal duties on the album and they were helped out on recording by guests including several who should be familiar to regular readers of Beat Surrender – The Coal Porters, The Arlenes, Danny George Wilson and The Cedars.

Eleven of albums twelve tracks are originals with writing credits shared between five members of the band, the twelfth is a cover of Bill Evans’ Petersburg Gal, the instrumentation is bluegrass authentic though the songwriting manages to incorporate more contemporary subject matter including the demise of the pizza delivery on frenetic opener Pizza Boy and an ode to travel on London’s underground Tube Trains, the writing and playing are top drawer and it’s a refreshing listen for UK fans of bluegrass who yearn for more of a homegrown infusion, the subject of my favourite track is a little more conventional enjoy Madeleine and if you get the chance get along to one of the bands club nights to see them in their element.

Well, it’s been a while since the release of our last album, Going to California, and, after living in America for the last few years and raising a couple of rowdy kids, we are ready to get back in the studio and make some music! We’ve got Grammy booked in for the kids, and we are wanting to go into Buzz Cason studio with our good friend Ken Coomer, former Wilco and Uncle Tupelo drummer, as producer.

We have amassed a selection of songs we are proud of and are looking to make a somewhat dark, piano led, Gene Clarkey, folky, nose dive into misery, hope and redemption. We really hope that if you’ve liked our style of music in the past, that you’ll trust us to come up with the goods again. We are singing together better than ever and with the help of some of Nashville’s finest, we feel we can make our best album yet.

In case you don’t know, the way Kickstarter works is that you pledge funds to a project you want to support and in return, you get cool rewards! It is all or nothing funding, so if a project doesn’t reach it’s funding goal by the deadline then it doesn’t get funded.

Our goal is $20,000. The money will cover production costs, including musicians, engineer and producer fees, studio hire, tape, mixing and mastering, with about 10% going to Kickstarter and Amazon. If we go over the $20,000, then we will spend more on things like artwork and design and the like, but rest assured all of your generous pledges will be spent on making this an album you’ll treasure.

Check back with us – we’ll be posting updates letting you know what we’re up to. In the meantine, come visit us on Facebook or our website:
