Rod Picott – Hang Your Hopes On A Crooked Nail

Rod Picott is over in the UK paying a series of dates October thru November, the tour coincides with the UK / Euro release of Rod’s new album Hang Your Hopes On A Crooked Nail, after the success of his last album Welding Burns which spent ten weeks on the AMA chart and earned Picott both Songwriter of the Year and Male Artist of the Year (2011) accolades by Freeform American Roots (FAR) as well as praise from Beat Surrender of course.

Hang Your Hopes On A Crooked Nail (the title lifted from a line in one of the album’s songs, ‘Dreams’) is a little more restrained than it’s predecessor and it seems, on first listen at least that Rod has mellowed, but the storytelling is by no means sweetness and light, there’s heartache, loss and despair in there too as the Maine born troubadours “Circus of Misery and Heartbreak” rolls on, ,the stories may be delivered with a gentler hand and voice though the melancholy permeates through the veneer of ‘hope’.

When You Need A Train It Never Comes by Amanda Shires

A Beat Surrender favourite Amanda Shires tours the UK and Ireland in April and May, the Texan fiddler-singer-songwriter is accompanied by long-time collaborator Rod Picott on guitar and Todd Pertll on lap steel.

There are also sessions planned with Bob Harris for his Radio 2 Sunday show and Barry Marshall-Everitt’s House Of Mercy whilst she’s over this side of the pond.

Last years album Carry Lightning made number seven on my Best of and remains a firm favourite.

Rod Picott – Welding Burns

Out earlier this year in the US, Rod Picott’s latest album Welding Burns is an independent release that’s available in the UK from today and Picott is touring over here in October to promote it, the dates are below and there’s a Bob Harris Country session planned too which I’m very much looking forward to. I mentioned in a recent post Picott’s contribution to the great Amanda Shires album Carrying Lightning and on this his seventh solo release she joins up with him again adding vocals and fiddle to the album which was recorded at True Tone Studios, Nashville TN with David Henry (Cowboy Junkies, REM) co-producing with Picott, it also features slide and electric guitar from the Will Kimbrough, a fellow who has a habit of turning up on quality albums time and time again.

Picott is the son of a welder and former Marine and grew up in a small town in Maine called South Berwick, Welding Burns the title of his current album paying homage to his father work, indeed ‘work’ and ‘the man’ is a theme on the album including one of the album highlights, the lead track Rust Belt Field, all of these tracks translate perfectly to this side of pond too, there are diversions from the work day blues, Little Scar is another album highlight – a bittersweet lament for a lost love told through the minutiae of detail couples share.

I’ve sung the praise of Picott’s childhood friend and long time song writing collaborator Slaid Cleaves on many occasions and this album from Picott is every bit as good as anything his friend has put out, their combined song writing abilities paint the picture for you beautifully well, succinctly and without fuss, it’s a memorable and brilliant piece of work.

Smartchoice is the place to go for the CD, if you’re quick you can bag a bonus disc featuring tracks from some of Picott’s earlier albums.

My pick of the tracks 410, our anti-hero takes the advice of the unemployment office “to think outside the box” to heart and sets of with a shotgun in his Firebird to go ‘shopping’.
