Brandy Zdan – UK & Ireland Tour · October 2013 · The ABC of Canadian Music

ABC-web

The ABC of Canadian Music featuring Awna Teixeira (Po’ Girl), Brandy Zdan and Cara Luft, the format is three individual sets in the first half with all three playing together after the interval.

I’m familiar with the music of A & C though B is in essence a new artist on the Beat Surrender radar having only made on brief appearance on the blog when a video was featured in April of last year from the band she co-founded with Dave Quanbury Twilight Hotel they recorded two Juno-nominated albums Highway Prayer (2008) and When the Wolves Go Blind (2010), recently Brandy has being touring as a ‘side-woman’ to Austin based The Trishas with whom who she’s played guitar, lap steel and accordion.

Alongside the ABC tour Brandy has a solo debut EP of her own to promote, the six track EP is a fine showcase for her talent as singer-songwriter and musician leaving the listener wanting more, Brandy plays guitar, lap steel, drums, percussion, Wurlitzer and synthesizer on the EP which was recorded in Brandy’s adopted home Austin TX with production by George Reiff (Ray Wylie Hubbard, Band of Heathens, Lincoln Durham), catch her line with Anwa and Cara in October.

Awna Teixeira – Where The Darkness Goes

CD100_out

The beautifully expressive and distinct vocal of Po’Girl Awna Teixeira has a chance to shine on it’s own on her debut solo release Where The Darkness Goes, with band-mate Allison Russell recording and touring with JT Cloud and Birds of Chicago Awna is keeping herself busy not only by releasing this album but also working on a companion volume to her first book – A Brief History and Introduction to the Gutbucket Bass- and a new series of Children’s Books www.hazytales.me.

Last year Awna took the decision to take-a-break from touring with Po’Girl and recording the album at Minbal studios in Chicago playing accordion, guitar, banjo, harmonica and ukulele on the album which is another success story for fan-funded projects after running a Kickstarter campaign.

Awna is touring in Europe next month in support of the album – try and get yourself along to one of the dates the songs are wonderful and are sure to feature heavily on the tour.
