The Great American Canyon Band

Paul Masson has turned up a few times on Beat Surrender, a fine songsmith he’s got a new project The Great American Canyon Band, a collaboration with his wife Krystal and a fluid line up of cohorts with a plan to carve their own Americana niche, their début EP Wild Heart was produced by Chris Freeland (Wye Oak, Lower Dens) and mastered by Jeff Lipton (The Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Spoon).

Folk Music For What Lies Ahead (Yerbird 2010)

Yerbird are releasing a compilation album on July 27th featuring 18 “new, unreleased & rare” songs from independent artists from their roster and further afield,  the album includes tracks from Paul Masson who I wrote about on Beat Surrender earlier this year, other highlights for me the tracks from Cam Penner, Strand of Oaks and Matthew Ryan.

Here’s a couple of samples from the kind folks at Yerbird

Paul Masson – My Girl Baltimore (Acoustic)

Ivana XL – Couch Surfing (Acoustic)

Paul Masson – Paul Masson EP

Paul Masson’s debut self-titled EP is a real gem and worthy of greater attention, the EP features Paul on acoustic guitar and vocals with support from Tom Hnatow on pedal steel / banjo and Bethany Dinsick providing harmony vocals.

The six track EP is solid start to finish, all the songs are written and crafted by Masson whose vocal is a perfect match for the meandering lo-fi alt-country on display here, the twang provided by the pedal steel and banjo is blended beautifully with the minimal percussion to produce a thoroughly enjoyable song set, do yourself a favour and pick up a copy, the EP is available through iTunes and eMusic.

My favourite from the EP My Girl Baltimore, you can and should check out more at MySpace
