Doc Dailey and Magnolia Devil “Victims, Enemies and Old Friends”

doc dailey

I’d read a couple of positive pieces on this album and it featured in few end of year Best Of’s that rarely get it wrong with recommendations, sounding right up my street I’d made a mental note to check it out, so when a copy arrived in Beat Surrender’s inbox recently I promoted it to the top of my listening list and I’m so glad I did.

Doc Dailey has been creating and performing original music out Muscle Shoals AL for a number of years both as a solo act and with the support of local musicians, back in 2005 he released The Family EP a six track affair on his own label the Southern Discipline Recording Company, after making the decision to the get back into the studio for a follow up to the EP Dailey set about getting a team of players together, first with Ben Tanner (ex FAME Recording Studio) the foundations of the the album Victims, Enemies, & Old Friends were recorded at Wishbone Studios in Muscle Shoals, then over the ensuing months a full band was put together, Jon Berry (banjo), Ben Stedman (bass), Kyle Minckler (drums), Amber Murray (vocals) and Nathan Pitts (pedal steel guitar), work on the album was completed over the next few months and features additional performances from  Danley Murner (mandolin), Kate Tayler Hunt (violin, viola, and cello), Anna Grott (vocals) , Jamie Barrier (fiddle) and 400 Unit guitar-slinger Browan Lollar.

Put all those instrumental elements together with Dailey’s excellent writing and you get a full-on piece that pulls in the best elements of rock, country and bluegrass and throws out a batch of songs that demand hitting the repeat button and turning the volume knob clockwise, adorned with Dailey’s high-lonesome vocals, copious amounts of steel, banjo and fiddle, Dailey describes his own sound as “steeling a little bit of music from everybody” the skill is putting it all together and that’s what being achieved on Victims, Enemies, & Old Friends – end result a real piece of twang magic.  Essential listening.
