Odds N Ends

This is a bit of an exclusive for Diverse Records. Simone got in touch with us and told us that he’d recorded a solo album. He’d re-recorded a host of The Duke & The King and Felice Brothers songs with just him, a microphone and an acoustic guitar. It was going to coincide with his solo tour of the UK and be sold on merch stands. Then came the bombshell, ‘do you want to release it on vinyl?’.

Of course, we said yes. It sounds amazing. For those of you that like a back story, Simone was rushed into hospital a couple of months ago, a post appeared on his website saying…

Americana Music Awards 2010

Info on the runners and riders for the 2010 AMA’s has surfaced, I always have trouble getting my head around this kind of thing, as rarely do the nominations make sense (to me), but hey if I had to choose the nominees the list run on and on, so I guess somewhere in here is a degree of logic.

My winner(s) from the choices on offer below - I came to the Dave Rawlings Machine album at the tail end of last year and it’s really grown on me, should have placed it much higher in my 2009 best of……

Dave Rawlings Machine – Newport Folk Festival 2009

Following on from the Gillian Welch in February, here’s the perfect companion listen. Roles reversed as Rawlings takes centre stage from Gillian Welch to showcase tracks from his back catalogue, new album and some choice covers too. The David Rawling’s machine album released at the tail end of last year quickly became a favourite and squeezed in to my Top 20 of the year, the combi-cover of Method Acting and Cortez the Killer is just wonderful and there’s a great version of this song in the performance. Download (Mp3 320K) Set List 1 Diamond Joe 2 I Hear Them All” 3 It’s Too Easy 4 The Bells of Harlem 5 Sweet Tooth 6 Ruby 7 On My Way Back to the Old Home 8 To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High) 9 Method Acting/Cortez the Killer 10 Big Rock Candy Mountain 11 Queen Jane Approximately 12 Jackson . . . → Read More: Dave Rawlings Machine – Newport Folk Festival 2009

Gillian Welch – Newport Folk Festival 2009

This is great live set from Gillian Welch, recorded at the Newport Folk Festival on August 1, 2009. Given the drama leading up to this performance it stands up very well indeed, hit by a five hour flight delay and a traffic jam entering Newport, it was down to local law enforcement locating Gillian and Co’s car and escorting them in with  minutes to spare that allowed the show to go on, performing blind – no glasses or time to put her contacts in, Gillian and long time side kick Dave Rawlings ran through a thirteen song set including the usual fan favourites and a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”. Set List Download (Mp3′s) 1 I Want To Sing That Rock and Roll 2 Elvis Presley Blues 3 My First Lover 4 No One Knows My Name 5 It’s Too Easy 6 Miss Ohio 7 Throw Me a Rope 8 Red . . . → Read More: Gillian Welch – Newport Folk Festival 2009
