Cale chats with Sloane Spencer of Country Fried Rock
The first time I saw Shonna Tucker she gave me the bird – well maybe it wasn’t aimed directly at me but I was front and centre at my first DBT gig and Shonna and the boys had just completed a typical barnstorming set and aside the music it’s stuck in my memory – I’ve yet to see the band post-Shonna and like many fans of DBT have no interest in the politics that led to Shonna or indeed ex-husband Jason Isbell leave, but when her tenure with DBT ended I has hoping that she would step up front and centre herself and indeed she has with a new band including ex-DBT guitar / steel player John Neff and Clay Leverett (drums), Bo Bedingfield (guitar) and Neil Golden (keys) (with a guest appearance from Muscle Shoals legend Spooner Oldham on Fender Rhodes. The album was co-produced by Kyle Spence and the band, together they also recorded a track for High Cotton: A Tribute To Alabama – which also features contributions from Jason Isbell, Lucero and Old Crow Medicine Show (I’ve added it to my wish list).
A Tell All is set for release October 15th on Sweet Nectar Records and available to pre-order now on Vinyl and CD, the albums ten songs are all originals penned by Shonna plus a co-write with John Neff and represent a cross-section of Shonna’s influences including of course the wonderful sound of Muscle Shoals where she grew up, “All these songs came fast, in a few months time. There was no theme or plan at all. Inspiration came from what was happening around me and that was a lot of different things”, here’s a taster of what’s in-store, you can listen to a trio of tracks from the album at Bandcamp, watch the EPK and listen to a great interview courtesy of Sloane Spencer and Country Fried Rock as she chat’s to Shonna about her musical journey, the band and the album.
