Eilen Jewell – God’s Jukebox

Listened to a great God’s Jukebox show recently, Mark Lamarr’s guest was Eilen Jewell and her fantastic band – Jerry Miller (Guitar), Johnny Sciascia (String Bass) and Jason Beek (Percussion and Vocals), plenty of banter and an extended session with five tracks from Eilen’s last album Sea of Tears including my favourites from that album, the cover of Them’s I’m Gonna Dress in Black and Codeine Arms. Eilen and the band have toured extensively in Europe of late gaining some great reviews on their way, they are winding up their tour next week with dates in Germany, Norway and Sweden before returning to the US later this month. Pete Molinari – BBC Radio 2

The blog’s now picking up a lot more traffic from overseas thanks to my fellow bloggers over “the pond” and “down under” who have been kind enough to link back to me, so it got me to thinking about running a sort of Best of British series of posts, featuring of the best of what Team Americana GB has to offer.

Though I’d kick it of with a plug for Pete Molinari, first came across Pete’s music thanks to the excellent What’s Kickin’ Volume 2 compilation album, you can check it out here at Stove Pony Records, Volume 1, 3 and 4 are fantastic too, crammed full of quality tracks and well worth buying.

The tracks here were played live on Mark Lamarr’s “Gods Jukebox” show on Radio 2 that aired on the 5th June and include some tunes that are to appear on Pete’s new . . . → Read More: Pete Molinari – BBC Radio 2

Mark Radcliffe – Thank You for the Days: A Boys’ Own Adventures in Radio and Beyond

Really enjoyed this book, undemanding in a good way – because it’s a collection of anecdotes and memories from specific times in his life it’s one of those books you can pick up and dip in and out of.

In it’s style it mirrors Radcliffe’s radio demeanor, it’s written in a laid back conversational way, the best chapters are the the one’s dealing with the artistes, Jagger, Bowie, Kate Bush, Dr. Feelgood, Kylie, The Pogues, the most poignant about John Peel – particularly where the author learns of his death. Radcliffe’s passion for the medium shines through in his writing, there is some insight into the workings of the BBC and some criticism although his reverence for “The Beeb” is evident, given his tenure I suppose it’s not surprising.

You can get a preview of the book at Amazon here

Ray Davies – Electric Proms

Completing the Ray Davies Electric Proms posts, here’s a link to download a video recording of the show, the quality ain’t great but the audio’s okay so it’s worth a try, it’s in DivX format. If you missed it before the full audio rip of the show is here. Ray Davies BBC Electric Proms Download Ray has just released an album featuring the Crouch End Choir, called The Kinks Choral Collection ,it’s received mixed reviews and personally after a couple of listens it’s failed to really impress, it’s not a bad album but sometimes less is more and some of the tracks invevitably loose their edge and don’t benefit from the makeover. . . . → Read More: Ray Davies – Electric Proms
