Grievous Angel – The Gram Parsons Story

Continuing on the Gram theme here’s a fantastic one hour audio documentary hosted by the venerable Bob Harris who takes a look back at the enigma that is Gram Parsons, contributions from Polly Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Keith Richards, Phil Kaufman and some rare words of wisdom from the legend himself.

Caitlin Rose @ The BBC

Own Side Now http://www.lhschiefer.com/ Louise Haywood-Schiefer

Caitlin Rose has been gathering some thoroughly deserved good press in the UK ahead of her first full length album due in August, it’s an album I’m really looking forward, here’s a taster in the form of a couple of session tracks that Caitlin recorded for Ricky Ross Another Country show back in April,  the session was recorded in Nashville with Ross putting the questions to Caitlin from Scotland – unable to get over the water because of the infamous Icelandic volcano and resulting ash cloud.

Both the Dead Flowers EP (still available on 10″ vinyl at Roughtrade and the Gorilla Man 7″ have become firm favourites and the tracks I’ve heard so far from the new album are sounding great.

Laura Cantrell – Beyond Country

(Photo from Laura’s homepage)

DJ and singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell gained a lot of fans in the UK after getting the highest of praise from the venerable broadcaster and all around good guy John Peel. Cantrell’s debut album Not the Tremblin’ Kind was described by Peel as “My favourite record of the last ten years and possibly my life is an LP by a New York woman born in Nashville called Laura Cantrell. It’s country, and I don’t know why I like it, but it has the same sort of effect on me as Roy Orbison had in the ’60s.”

Cantrell went on to record five sessions for Peel between February 2001 and December 2003, some of the tracks from those sessions are available to download along with a choice selection of others at Cantrell’s website.

Here’s a trio of tracks including the title track from the 2002 release When the Roses . . . → Read More: Laura Cantrell – Beyond Country

Charlie Robison – BBC Session “Beautiful Day”

Bob Harris recorded a short session with Charlie Robison earlier this year during the Americana awards in Nashville, the session aired on the 5th November – I was otherwise engaged that evening getting soaked to the skin whilst simultaneously enjoying hot dogs and beer – I caught up with the show on iPlayer after I’d dried out and was very pleased I did.

Robison performed two live session tracks and had a chat with Bob about the album, the divorce and Austin versus San Antoine, his album Beautiful Day has being one of the muscial highlights for me this year and he performed two acoustic tracks from the record during the session Down Again and the title track, before the session closed with one of my favourite tracks from the Beautiful Day album Feeling Good. For any overseas readers who may not have come across Bob Harris before, the . . . → Read More: Charlie Robison – BBC Session “Beautiful Day”
