Floating Compass – Tales of Yesteryear

Thanks to the connected world provided by Twitter I’ve being introduced recently to the wonderful musical world of Floating Compass and their album Tales of Yesteryear a concept album that sets out to carry the listener on a musical journey through a medieval town with each track created to portray elements as denoted by the titles of the individual tracks (or more correctly in this instance movements).

Stylistically the album is a collection of richly adorned orchestral chamber pop written by Tim Cronin who has played trumpet with a whole host of indie and folk luminaries including Camera Obscura, Frightened Rabbit, Los Campesinos!, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Antlers, Beirut, Stornoway, Jukebox the Ghost and The Unthanks to name but a few, together with Charlie Rauh, Michael Sinicropi, John Gray and Jacob Hyman together they’ve created a recording that takes the listener on an intriguing musical sojourn, and if you’re looking something a little different it’s definitely worth spending some time with.
