The Barker Band - Dig Me A Hole

One of my favourite UK bands The Barker Band have kindly sent me a copy of their latest album Dig Me A Hole , the album is the bands fifth and given I’m a huge fan of the previous four albums, and I’m a glass half empty kind of guy – despite having already been able to listen to some tracks from the album on-line I was a little apprehensive before listening to the whole album fearing it may not reach the heights of the previous releases and would end in disappointment, my fears I’m pleased to report were totally unfounded as it’s a wonderful album and goes straight into the top drawer of 2012 for me.

The band have developed their sound and move further away from their earlier bluegrass leanings now drawing on a greater range of styles to produce their strongest set of tracks to date, several members . . . → Read More: The Barker Band – Dig Me A Hole

Mad Staring Eyes - Talking to the Operator

North London indie Americana folk outfit Mad Staring Eyes have a new album out a little later this year, the six-piece band have being around for 20 years and have gone through a few incarnations along the way. Back in 2006 they picked up a John Peel ‘Best New Band’ award and played the Peel Stage at Glastonbury, they’ve toured across North America and played by SXSW and NXNE, supporting along the way an eclectic set of acts including Supergrass, ABC, The Magic Numbers and Pete Doherty, they’ve collected a number of accolades over the last few years and recorded their second album Bored of Looking Cool at legend Ray Davies’ Konk Studio in North London – and somehow they’ve still managed to fly beneath my music radar, after listening to their soon to be released album Talking to the Operator it seems I have some serious homework to do as . . . → Read More: Mad Staring Eyes – Talking to the Operator

Scotty Alan - Wreck and the Mess

I read a excellent and positive review of this album over at Common Folk Music some time ago, made a mental note to follow up and promptly forgot – so much music so little time, but sometimes you get a second chance and mine arrived recently courtesy of Scott Alan’s UK PR company who provided me an opportunity to listen and enjoy Alan’s album Wreck and the Mess for myself.

If you’re still with me and haven’t clicked out to read Andrew’s piece at CFM I’ll give you a brief bio, he’s a former punk rocker and long-time resident of the outskirts of a small town called Marquette MI. self sufficient,  a man of the earth, a hunter gatherer who lives of the land in an off-grid log cabin, this guy has an enviable lifestyle, not one for all of us for sure – but truth be told . . . → Read More: Scotty Alan – Wreck and the Mess

Sons of Bill - Sirens

Seems so long ago since I backed Sons of Bill’s Kickstarter campaign for their third studio album Sirens, my CD turned up a couple of weeks ago and has been at the top of my music playlist of late, I loved the the bands last album (even though it got me into trouble with Blogger last time) and Sirens is every bit as good.

Santa Ana Winds by sonsofbill

The lead track Santa Ana Winds released as a teaser track some time ago has quickly established itself as a mainstay of any playlist I concoct, in fact my only ‘complaint’ about the album is the band didn’t end the album with an acoustic or tempered version of the track – check out the audio visuals below and tell me I’m wrong – the good news thanks to the fine folks at Music Fog you can get the ‘missing’ track.
