If you buy one record this week make sure it’s the brilliant Brilliant Light the new album from Danny & The Champions Of The World that’s out of Loose the end of this week, double-albums are a rarity these days when it comes to new music, but Danny George Wilson and his band have all the lyrical and musical acumen to pull it off with aplomb, serving up a soulful blend of Americana to touch the heart and mind.
Danny Wilson tells us, “Waiting For The Right Time is the opening track on our new album ‘Brilliant Light’. I wrote it after watching the fantastic documentary about Ronnie Lane, ‘Passing Show’. It’s about wanting to get back to the heart of things – a more simple life perhaps. We wanted to make a video in our natural habitat, something real and honest, so we thought we’d get our friend and collaborator Pete Millson and his very talented film maker son Elliot to film us at our favourite pub and very regular haunt The Betsey Trotwood, in Farringdon London. Might see you down there one of these days!”
With the new album ‘Brilliant Light’ Danny Wilson has made his All Things Must Pass – a big record of hit after hit stretching over two albums, plus a further bonus set of instrumentals. He’s allowed both himself and his band the absolute freedom to explore, experiment, and collaborate, and they’ve grabbed it with both hands. Hidden away somewhere in this diverse collection you’ll find the question “can we release ourselves back into the brilliant light?”. For Danny the brilliant light is creativity, but more than that it’s collaborative creativity, and the process of birthing these songs, both by design and then serendipity, has been to maximise the creative potential of all The Champs.
Of the eighteen songs on this magnificent double album, Waiting For The Right Time is the only track solely composed by Danny; personal philosophy, reflections on Ronnie Lane, and a paean to neckerchief rock all rolled into one. The music video features the band in their entirety performing the song in one of their most loved pubs; The Betsey Trotwood.
