Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou – Expatriot

Expatriot is the fourth studio album from Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou and in contrast to their previous release, the excellent self-produced La Ferme De Fontenaille  the pair have engaged the services of Ethan Johnsthe acclaimed producer, engineer, mixer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, the album was recorded at Johns’ Wiltshire studio and he plays on the album as well as taking care of production duties.

As the common denominator on some of my favourite albums of the last fifteen years (Heartbreaker, Gold, Pneumonia, and Rainy Day Music), personal expectations were high and I wasn’t to be disappointed as the collaboration delivers the goods wonderfully well, making it impossible to argue with Johns summarising thoughts on the album – “I think it’s a beautiful, honest and engaging record, it’s very powerful”.

‘Big name’ producer to one side though as the real stars of the show are of course Trevor & Hannah-Lou, both possess distinct vocals which, when wrapped around their clever wordcraft and rhymes, are a real joy to listen to and when they harmonise and interchange the experience is heightened further; when you combine with the deliciously fluid melodies dressed with deft instrumentation there much to admire and enjoy, aside from the expected acoustic guitars and harmonica the use of other elements including a vintage Lorenzo organ and Mellotron strings add interest and colour creating a beautiful flow of music from the opening title track to  the closing song A Better Day – highly recommended.

The album is jointly released on Ethan Johns’ Three Crow Records and Trevor and Hannah-Lou’s Anglophone Recording Company and is released on the 2nd of October – in the run up to the big day there a a number of shows booked starting at the end of the week, the duo will also be supporting Jools Holland in October and November and are working on a headlining tour of their own – watch this space for news.
