Lilly Hiatt and The Dropped Ponies – Let Down

Okay lets get the family connection out of the way first, Lilly has a famous father – AMA Lifetime Achievement award winner John, this in itself raises expectations does it not? Well I’m pleased to report the musical gene has definitely been passed on in this case as the debut album from Lilly Hiatt and The Dropped Ponies possesses more than enough quality to suggest they’ll enjoy plenty of success on their own merits in the months and years ahead, Let Down is no let down. Lilly came to my attention only recently when she provided guest vocals on Beat Surrender favourite Ronnie Fauss latest album I Am The Man You Know I’m Not, the pair are both on New West imprint Normaltown Records

The album is a fine collection of rootsy music encapsulating country, folk and some fine rocking too, Hiatt has already tasted success a solo artist and shared the stage with Americana legends Emmylou Harris and Jim Lauderdale as well as touring and playing with her dad, things really started to come together for her after hooking up with North Carolina guitarist Beth Finney, the girls later hooked up with drummer Jon Radford (Charles Walker and the Dynamites, Drew Holcombe Band) and bass player Jake Bradley (Over the Rhine) together The Dropped Ponies, Let Down was produced by Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin, Gretchen Peters) and gets it’s official release tomorrow – October 23rd.
