I’ve been sitting on this album for a while now, it’s one that slipped between cracks of my bespoke tracking ‘system’ for music submissions, but it’s surfaced now it’s never too late to give a shout out to great music.
Canadian Cam Penner first came to my attention through a rockin’ track that appeared on the Volume 1 of the excellent What’s Kickin’ compilations, available at Zingg , that track Rye Whiskey appeared on Penner’s 2006 album Felt Like a Sunday Night which he he followed by a more bare bones release Trouble and Mercy a weary road album on which Herohill waxed lyrical.
Gypsy Summer is a big step away from the road hardened troubadour album Trouble and Mercy but it’s an equally rewarding album in it’s own way and Penner slip’s easily into mode, taking on production duties himself for the first time he makes the songs work beautifully in the realm of a more expansive sound and style palette, a wonderful record.
