Catherine MacLellan’s new album Silhouette is released through one of my favourite labels True North Records who are home not only to Catherine but a trio of favourite Canadian artists Lynn Miles, The Wailin’ Jennys and Madison Violet, the bulk of the album was recorded in a remote cabin on her native Prince Edward Island (where the video below was shot) in a rural location with a collective of long-time friends and cohorts, the album features fourteen tracks in all, thirteen original songs from Catherine and a recording of a track written by her late father Gene, an inductee of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, his song Snowbird was made famous by Anne Murray and recorded by both Elvis and Bing Crosby, here an acoustic version of the track appears as one of the albums many highlights, it features backing vocals from Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy and some sweet pedal steel from Burke Carroll.
Regular readers will know I have a penchant for female singer songwriters and I can assure you this album is premier league quality, wonderfully performed with effortless melodies the album has strength in depth through the quality writing, title and art-work may be contre-jour but the music and vocal is full of fine detail.
