Emily O’Halloran - Morphine & Cupcakes

I loved the promo track for this album that dropped into my inbox in July, now I’ve got a copy of the full release I’ve got to throw out a mention for it again, the wonderfully title Morphine & Cupcakes is a real treat if you like slow-core Americana this is a perfect late night accompaniment. The Australian-born singer/songwriters hypnotic weathered vocal sways wearily through the opaque instrumentation in a wonderfully melancholic amble that had this listener transfixed, drawing inspiration from her unconventional background and nomadic wanderings (bio) O’Halloran has delivered a real slow burning gem of an album.

The Quiet American Vol. ii

One of the biggest rewards of writing a music blog is the surprises that land on the doormat from time-to-time that would have otherwise passed me buy, this recording is is a prime example of that, The Quiet American a.k.a. Drawn into music through his school band and choir Keim studied music education and French horn at college, after a chance encounter with an old-timey hootenanny 1999 he was inspired to pick and learn the upright bass . . . → Read More: The Quiet American Vol. ii

Sarah MacDougall - The Greatest Ones Alive

Here I go again wooed by a deliciously distinct and resonate vocal, this time provided by Swedish born Canadian Sarah MacDougall, but there’s more to this ladies music than simply soundly ‘great’, the album is fine collection of original songs, music meditations dealing with the universal themes of love, loss, friendship, growing up and self-believe through which MacDougall bares a little of her soul to the listener, ‘some people put their lives into a dream, I put my life inside a song’ is the opening couplet of track one Sometimes You Lose, Sometimes You Win.

To complete the package the instrumentation and production is first-class, the melodies are dressed carefully by the albums supporting cast, the highlights for me include the sweet lap steel (Weissenborn) provided by Tim Tweedale and the backing and harmony vocals of Po’Girl Awna Teixeira, the album The Greatest Ones Alive was put together in . . . → Read More: Sarah MacDougall – The Greatest Ones Alive
