Following on from 2008 excellent Bloods Too Rich Canadian Luke Doucet and his band The White Falcon have released a real gem of an album on Six Shooter Records (Life is too short to listen to shitty music), ten originals and a Gordon Lightfoot cover, the album Steel City Trawler kicks of with a pair of straight up rockers the catchy / clappy Monkeys and riff-laden Thinking People, track three features a vocal contribution from Doucet’s better-half Melissa McClelland and track four (the single) is the one that first caught my attention The Ballad of Ian Curtis is Doucet’s tribute to the legendary Joy Division front-man ending with the line “rope will take my breathe away if the shakes don’t do it first” listen here courtesy of Six Shooter.
Tucked away in the heart of the song cycle is the odd-track out, a clever diversion Magpie has a touch of Midlake about it and provides a breather before Doucet cranks things back up again with four more rockers including the Lightfoot cover Sundown and the bluesy Dirty, Dirty Blonde , the album was produced by Sloan’s Andrew Scott and also features original comic book-style art by Hamilton, ON-based artist David Collier, there are a number of dates in October in England and he’s providing support to Blue Rodeo in the Republic.
