Nutria “Permanent Reminder of a Temporary Emotion” (Cowboy Angel Music 2010)

I had no idea about Jay Gonzalez previous music projects before adding his keyboard skills to the current Drive-by Truckers line up, well now I do, as along with front-man Bob Spires he was co-founder of Nutria, and together they were members of The Possibilities, whose albums I have flagged for download on eMusic when my account refreshes.

On this 7 track EP the full line up is Bob Spires (lead vocals, electric and acoustic guitars), Jay Gonzalez (keys, electric guitar, backing vocals), Jason Eshelman (drums, backing vocals), and David Weiglein (bass, keys, lap steel, keys, backing vocals) ,as Gonzalez left the band to join with the Drive-By Truckers, Nutria added Andy Pope (bass) and Mark Lawrence (guitar, bass, keys) who feature on two tracks on the EP.

A truly epic version of “Keep on Rockin’ ” and a romp through The Beatles “A Day in A Life” to . . . → Read More: Neil Young – Glastonbury 2009 – Keep on Rockin’

Whispering Pines “Family Tree” (Whispering Pines 2010)

Retro isn’t a bad thing, if you take your name from a tune by The Band you’re setting your stall out loud and clear as to where your influences and inspiration are coming from, Whispering Pines are a quintet based out of LA and their album released back in February surfaced in my Reviewshine in-box at an opportune time, sliding itself in beside the bluesy albums that have permeated by recent listening, the nine track collection includes eight original compositions and a over of JJ Cale’s Crazy Mama and clocks in at a vinyl friendly 45 minutes, keeping with the retro theme the album was recorded on analogue equipment to 2 inch tape and was mastered for a vinyl release which the band are hoping to make available on premium 180 gram soon. This is the bands début release and they’ve set the bar high , the album ebbs and flows with confidence and a relaxed swagger of swampy blues, southern rock, soul . . . → Read More: Whispering Pines “Family Tree” (Whispering Pines 2010)
