The Avery Set “Returning to Steam”

Taking a DIY route to promote themselves I came to this album through the bands forum post at Americana UK where the four piece based in East Nashville quickly garnered some new fans and got themselves an interview.

The band’s origins can be traced back to a small Michigan town where high school friends, singer/songwriter Chris Zehnder and drummer Jake Bartlett met and began playing together, before they both ended up settling in Nashville,  with the additional talents of Brandon Harris on guitar and Shawn Supra on upright/electric bass The Avery Set’s sophomore release Returning to Steam is a bakers dozen collection of original songs, influenced and inspired by the bands eclectic musical tastes.

Equal parts country, folk and rock – the album opens with Wandering Shoes easing you in, with Jacob’s cello to the fore throughout the song, track two takes a sharp right turn into classic alt-country territory with the excellent Gotta Move, the twists and turns continue throughout the album  before closing things out with a piano number Set My Weight on Me and a contemplative acoustic “bonus” track Speak Slowly – for my money the guys are at their best on the “rockers”.

My pick of the crop Blown Away
