Grayson Capps – Live @ The Paradiso (Hyena Records 2009)

Grayson Capps is classic troubadour, an acoustic country blues performer steeped in the Southern culture – you’re never going to capture the true nature of a live performance on film but this DVD release from Hyena Records is up-close and personal and a excellent buy whether you’re a fan already or have an appreciation for the raw troubadour experience this is a must have, treat yourself to the DVD at Amazon which comes with an audio download of all of the tracks from the performance – or you can grab the audio only at iTunes.

Grayson’s CD album Songbones was a big hit with me in 2007 and I was keen to listen and watch to this release, the concert was recorded using a 5 camera HD set-up but the master footage was lost, then some time later a DVD from the filming turned up at the Amsterdam offices of Hyena Records, by current DVD standards the quality isn’t great but captures the essence of the performance as Grayson treats the crowd to close to two hours of tracks from his back catalogue, including Guitar and Washboard Lisa from Songbones with the added bonus of Grayson’s commentary and stories of the songs.

The concert took place at the famed Paradiso venue in Amsterdam, I was a big fan of Fabchannel the website that used to archive and stream many of the performances from the venue before it’s demise  last year, a real shame as there was a fantastic range of media to enjoy including performances from some Richmond Fontaine, Drive-by Truckers, Paul Weller and Steve Cradock, it was a superb online resource, read about it’s unnecessary demise here.
