Whitney Mann – The Way Back Home EP

Got to listen to a wonderful six song EP this week – the CD Was released back in May of last year and is the first (and hopefully not the last) from alt-country singer/songwriter Whitney Mann from Madison, WI. Whitney is backed by Kyle Jacobson, Tim Russell and Andrew Harrison on the EP The Way Back Home which is a perfect showcase of the artists range – underpinned by a gorgeous country vocal and strong melodies with a healthy dose of pedal steel to complete the package. Call the Cops is the lead off track and my pick from the half dozen on show, vocal and strummed guitar are joined by aching pedal steel in a tale of good love turning bad. On the strength of this EP Whitney is firmly in the “one to watch“ category and I for one will be keeping an eye out for the next release. Ryan Bingham’s Rugged Country

The guy who gargles whiskey and grit is making headlines with his song The Weary Kind that features in the film Crazy Heart, never been much on soundtracks but this one looks like it may force me to make an exception given the tracklisting.

Here’s a treat for you three live cuts from Mr Bingham from his last appearance on NPR, including Southside of Heaven from his album Mescalito – my favourite tune from his repertoire plus a great rendition of Hard Times from the same album and a track from last years album Roadhouse Sun. Steve Dawson “I Will Miss The Trumpets and the Drums” (Undertow 2010)

I first came across Steve Dawson through Dolly Varden (what’s in a name) who’s last three releases are firm favourites and I would highly recommend them, you can check the bands full back catalogue here, I Will Miss The Trumpets and the Drums is Steve’s second solo album but the first I’ve had the pleasure of listening too. The lead off track from the album entitled Obsidian is an engaging opener – a lovely slice of pop-soul with guitar, organ and pedal steel combining with Dawson’s smooth soul laden vocal, here’s the track showcased on YouTube. Much of the album was created by Dawson working solo in his Chicago studio and it has been put together beautifully with a eye for detail, splashes of pedal steel, vibraphone and violin carefully blended with guitar and keyboards, there’s a range of styles on display here, from the acoustic solo Long Overdue to . . . → Read More: Steve Dawson “I Will Miss The Trumpets and the Drums” (Undertow 2010)
